So a few weeks ago a few of my girlfriends and I were talking about friendships and how we all felt like God was removing people from our lives to make room for those he intends to be walking this journey out with us.
Some of you may have gone through that, or are in that exact place right now… we get you! You’re all excited about a project you’re working on, or excited about a revelation/ promise the Lord spoke over you and you share with that friend or that group of people and they all think you’re crazy or give you some reaction that you didn’t expect.
Giving God Room in Your Friendships
When this happens, questions may come in your mind, “but why are they being so difficult?” , “why don’t they get it? Why aren’t they happy for me?” , “why all of a sudden it feels like they’re against me?”, “What did I do?” When we get to a place where thoughts like these flood our minds, we become very self- centered, not intentionally but it becomes about “I”.
And, if we’re honest, most of us want everyone to like us and approve of us. We want people to be excited about what we’re excited about.
Well, truth be told, not everybody liked Jesus. Not everyone that was around him agreed with him and the life he lived, but did that stop him from doing the will of the Father? No. He knew who he was and he stuck to that. He was focused and didn’t let distractions steer him off his path.
Sometimes we have certain expectations of people; we want them to act and react in certain ways because then we’re pleased, and when they don’t meet those expectations, we get upset /frustrated… well here is the best explanation to what happens.
But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.
When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.
But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.
Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others.
For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ. ~ 1 Corinthians 2:10-16
Basically this is saying, don’t expect your friends who are not walking where you’re walking to understand the revelations the Lord is giving you. Don’t be upset with them that they’re not where you are.
The dreams, visions and passion the Lord has planted in YOUR heart, is FOR YOU, not for everyone else to understand. So don’t expect them to and you won’t be disappointed.
I challenge you, let’s agree to not allow people to distract us and rob us of what God did actually speak into our lives!
Let’s be like Jesus and love those people where they’re at, but also give room for the Lord to remove those that are robbing us of our peace so that he can bring the right friends and resources in our lives to help us to fulfill the plans he has for us. Those who will understand and genuinely be happy for us because they too walk where we walk. They also have the mind of Christ.
