The Lord delights in me. Say what? I have read the Bible my entire life. I grew up in a Christian home and even attended Christian schools for most of my education. I’ve been a part of many Bible studies and guided reading plans over the years. But this last year I’ve been on a mission to read the Bible through in 365 days or less. I am using an app that helps me do a guided reading every day.
Believe me, I have found quite a few gems. Some of these things are brand new to me and other passages are just things that don’t get preached about much. Some of these Old Testament passages have even caused me to just shake my head and thank God that someday maybe He can explain it to me, because right now I have no idea why these stories are even included.
But the other night I was reading in II Samuel and I found this verse. It said, “the Lord delights in me.” My instinctive response was not very spiritual. In fact, it sounded more like “say what?”
That got me thinking a whole different way. I remember the night my son was born and I couldn’t let him go to the nursery. I held him in the hospital room for the entire night and just looked at him. I couldn’t figure out the nursing thing yet; my body was exhausted and my emotions raw. All I knew was that I could not get enough of that little baby boy. I guess you could say that I was delighting in my new baby son.
When I read that verse last night, it just hit me. Is it possible that God delights in me the way I delight in my children? Now, of course, not every moment of being a parent is delightful. But you know the moments I’m talking about. The times when you just can’t control the emotions, the tears in your eyes and the pride that just about makes you want to burst. You find delight in your children. Is that what God does with us?
He rescued me, because He delighted in me!” II Samuel 22:20
The next time I step on the scales and don’t like the number or look in the mirror and start to complain about the new wrinkles or another gray hair, I want to remember that I am God’s creation. I am beautifully designed. And he delights in me. I want to read this verse and have a different reaction next time. When I see the words that God delights in me, I want to not respond with “say what?” Instead, I want to respond with “thanks!”

Isn’t it wonderful to know that the Lord delights in us as His very own children? What a blessing! Indeed, what a great comfort to know that He loves us this much!
